DOT,Chemical,Railroad Companies Agree to Design Safer Rail Tank Car

The federal government joined forces with a chemical manufacturer and two railroad companies to develop an improved rail car to transport hazardous chemicals under an agreement announced Jan".16.The Department of Transportation,Dow Chemical Co.,Union Pacific Corp.,and Union Tank Car Co.(UTLX)signed a memorandum of cooperation to develop the "next generation"rail tank car,DOT said in a statement.The tank car will be designed to minimize the number of hazardous releases from rail cars,the department said.Tank cars can carry materials such as chlorine and anhydrous ammonia,which can be toxic when inhaled.
