Presidential Decree Sets Policies,Priorities,Launches 4.8 Billion Research Program

RIO DE JANEIRO-A Feb.8 presidential decree sets out Brazil's biotechnology policy and priorities and establishes a 10-year,10 billion real (US4.8 billion)biotechnology research program,a Ministry of Development,Industry,and Foreign Trade (MDIC)spokeswoman told BNA Feb.12.The decree (No.6,041),issued by President Luiz Ina-cio Lula da Silva,established a National Biotechnology Committee that will select the projects to receive biotechnology research funds,the MDIC spokeswoman said.The MDIC will spearhead the initiative,but the National Biotechnology Committee will constitute officials from across the government.
