The objectives of medication administration are often summarized in the 'five rights': the right patient, dose, medication, time, and route of administration (1). The use of these five rights aims to reduce medication errors. However, getting the right dose requires knowledge of pharmacokinetics (PK), pharmacodynamics (PD), and the adverse effects profile.Concentration at the effect site determines response. The desired effect is known as the target effect (TE), and the concentration that achieves this TE is the target concentration (TC).
