WHILE one group of EU legislators appears dedicated to easing stocking densities in cages, a second group has a plan to intensify densities of free range egg flocks. This latest move Brussels proposal is for a 400 per cent increase in the number of hens farmers can stock to the hectare. It has been condemned by UK free range farmers as disastrous for bird welfare, for production costs and for the ability of the free range sector to compete in the EU market.
