Spiking mortality syndrome

Stephen Lister, Crowshall Veterinary Services, explains this ill-defined term. THE condition known as spiking mortality of turkeys (SMT) has taken the poultry industry by storm. On both sides of the Atlantic it has become a talking point and "buzz" word, some dismissing it as an ill-defined term, but others take it seriously and are seeking solutions. Estimated financial losses in some states of the USA have exceeded 25 million dollar since the syndrome was first described in 1991, so it is important to find some answers to the many questions that it has posed for farmers and veterinarians.
