The importance of pneumatic transport has grown significantly and the number of applications is gradually expanding. When designing a pneumatic transport system the basic task is to diminish the material to be worn out in the process and, at the same time, to avoid congestions in the pipeline. The inherent problem of pneumatic transport in dilute phase conveying systems is the correlation between the degree to which the material wears out and the speed of transport. Speeding up the transport has a negative effect on pipeline and material. Slowing down the transport, however, increases the likelihood of congestions and down-times. It is impossible to determine the optimal adjustment in advance since the characteristics of the material flow are changing steadily and randomly. Finding the optimal adjustment remains a tightrope walk.
