Reps. Wynn, Solis Ask GAO to Investigate EPA's Methods for Contaminants, Standards

Two members of Congress asked the Government Accountability Office Jan. 31 to examine the processes by which the Environmental Protection Agency identifies drinking water contaminants for potential regulation and revises drinking water standards. Reps. Al Wynn (D-Md.) and Hilda Solis (D-Calif.) asked Comptroller General David Walker to investigate why EPA had not identified a single new contaminant, including the rocket fuel component perchlorate, in the two Contaminant Candidate Lists (CCLs) that it has been required to publish under the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act amendments.
