The history of Russia and the Soviet Union during the twentieth century has been strongly affected by a series of social and political upheavals that have had disastrous demographic consequences (Andre, Darsky, and Kharkova 1992). The main crises occurred in the periods 1915-22, 1928-34, and 1941-47 (Zakharov and Ivanova 1996).
