Interpenetrating polymer netoworks (IPN) are a unique type of polymer blend [1-5] synthesized by swelling crosslinked polymer (1) with a second monomer (2), plus crosslinking and activating agents, and polymerzing monomer 2 in situ. The term interpenetrating polymer networks was adopted because, in the limiting case of high compatibility between crosslinked polymers 1 and 2, both networks could be visu-alized as being interpenetrating and continuous throughout the entire macroscopic sample.
