Feedstock, scale hold key to industry growth

CONSTRAINS in feedstock sourcing and creaking infrastructure has limited the growth of the Indian chemical industry, despite rising urbanisation boosting demand. Naphtha, which is derived while refining crude oil, is the major feedstock for the chemical industry. Though India is a leading producer of a few chemicals, they are not cost effective due to lack of scale. This has led to large-scale imports, particularly from China.
