THE West Bengal government has pulled out of the Petroleum, Chemical and Petrochemical Investment Region (PCPIR) project in the state, which was to be set up in the Nayachar Island in Haldia. The state government has formally intimated the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) about its decision. After the new Government took over in West Bengal, there were news reports that as promised during the elections to the State Legislative Assembly, the new Government would not go ahead with the PCPIR project. The State Government also stopped attending all review meetings related to the project. Finally, the State Government informed the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, in a letter dated 8 February, 2012 that it has decided to develop an industrial park, power plant and an eco-tourism park on the Nayachar Island and therefore, it will not be developing the PCPIR Project.
