NZ pork growth cycle continued in 2004

The growth cycle within the New Zealand pork industry has continued during 2004 with a 5% annual increase in the number of pigs slaughtered during the Meat Year which ended in September 2004. The trend towards larger pigs has been reflected in the fact that total tonnage of pork produced has increased by 10%. At the same time returns to producers have decreased during the last year, although the farmgate pork prices are slowly showing signs of a recovery.
