Mycotoxin in perspective

Mycotoxins can interfere with animal productivity but can also impact on the safety of food for human consumption. For example, aflatoxin Ml is a metabolite of aflatoxin Bl and is of concern in cow's milk and whole milk is being sampled from tankers and tested for this toxin in Australia and New Zealand. If ochratoxin is detected in the blood of slaughtered pigs in Denmark, then the entire carcass is considered contaminated and the carcass is condemned when 25 micrograms of ochratoxin per ml of blood is measured.
