Previous studies suggest that gilt progeny perform more poorly than sow progeny with higher mortality (18% vs 4.4%) and higher medication rates (21% vs 3.5%) between 4-10 weeks of age (Holyoake, 2006). Lower weights throughout production have also been found with gilt progeny an average of 7 kg lighter at 22 weeks of age compared to sow progeny (Miller et al, unpublished).
