Iran: Processing In Its Infancy: Currently there are 65 poultry processing plants in Iran of which at least 15 require substantial modernisation to conform to the latest decrees issued by the country's Veterinary Organisation

Poultry processing is a young activity in Iran, where 500 million broilers are grown each year, yielding some 600,000 tons of chickenmeat. The birds are usually conveyed from the farms to the plants in plastic crates on trucks which have been designed for transporting poultry in this manner. At present there are 65 poultry slaughtering plants, of which 15 are what can be classified as 'traditional' while the remaining 50 can be considered as conventional processing plants. Of the latter, the hourly throughput ranges from around 2000 birds at the semiautomatic units to 6000 birds where the plants are fully-automatic.
