In recent years at SPACE, the French livestock show at Rennes, Brittany, has reflected the state of the national poultry industry. This is particularly true of the final two years of the 20th century when poultry meat and eggs were rocked by variousfeed scares and by the realisation that subsidies of exports to third countries were not going to last forever. First Louis le Pensec in 1998 and then his successor as Minister of Agriculture Jean Glavany in 1999 had to face angry demonstrations from poultry and pig farmers. This year, however, M Glavany had a relatively smooth ride. The sun shone throughout the four days and it was all smiles as show president Jean-Michel Lemetayer guided him around the stands, not a protester in sight. Poultry, particularly the broiler sector, had been through "turbulent times" Mr. Lemetayer told him. But French poultry farmers were a resilient bunch and were bouncing back with new, safer products.
