Australia: Update on statistics and industry infrastructure

Australia's commercial laying flock is estimated at 10 million, being in the hands of about 900 farmers. Flock sizes vary from 200 to 400,000 with the 15 largest farms, all over 100,000 birds, housing about 35% of the total flock. An estimated 2400 million eggs are produced annually for the domestic market. At least 60% of the 151 commercially produced eggs consumed annually by each person, have brown shells. Since 1992, the number of farms has dropped by a further 15%. emphasising the restructuringand consolidation that has continued since deregulation of Government controlled egg marketing authorities in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia (Western Australia, Tasmania and Queensland have not deregulated).
