Biological control of insect pests in poultry houses

House flies and Beetles cause a nuisance but they can also bring huge costs in terms of spreading disease, eating the birds' feed and litigation from irate neighbours. Researchers at Cornell University have identified a number of other insects that offer potential for biological control, without chemicals. In recent years, poultry producers have increasingly run into conflict with neighbours over pest management issues. This trend is likely to increase as the urbanisation of our rural areas continues. Following the land application of manure, a poultry producer's worst nightmare is waking up to a front-page article in the local newspaper identifying them as the cause of a house fly or darkling beetle invasion. Unfortunately this has occurred several times in the United States over the past decade.
