The history and control of Newcastle disease in Albania

First diagnosed in the 1940s, the poultry industry has worked hard to control the disease, with success. Newcastle disease (ND) was first recorded in Albania in 1941. During the period from 1941 to 1945, the disease was suspected (although not confirmed) but in 1945, the presence of ND was confirmed by physiological assays performed on chickens that had apparently died from the disease. The first cases were recorded in Tirana but later, ND was identified in other districts of the country such as Durres, Lushnje, Berat and Vlore. From the first cases in the 1940s until the 1990s, there were six significant ND outbreaks in Albania (Table 1).
