Talking turkey diseases

The 4th International Symposium on Turkey Diseases was held recently in Berlin, Germany. It was a unique occasion, concentrating the minds of the world,s turkey experts on changing disease patterns and new knowledge about the pathogens. There were also sessions addressing political issues, welfare and consumer safety. For three sunny days in May, Berlin played host to the 4th International Symposium on Turkey Diseases. It was jointly organised by the German Veterinary Medical Society, the German branch of the WPSA and the Institute of Poultry Diseases at the Free University of Berlin, all ably co-ordinated by Dr Hafez M Hafez. The first symposium was held in 1998 and each one has been attended by more participants, reflecting the rise in importance of both turkey production around the world and the attention paid to health and disease of this species. There were just over 200 delegates at the latest conference, representing some 32 countries. The symposium was dedicated to Dr Y M Saif for his outstanding contribution to the pathogenesis, diagnosis and control of turkey diseases. Dr Saif is Professor and Head of the Food Animal Research Program and Assistant Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Ohio State University in the USA. He is author or co-author of 125 scientific publications, Editor-in-Chief of the 11th Edition of "Diseases of Poultry" and widely travelled giving lectures and advice. In his address of thanks, Dr Saif emphasised the importance of the symposium, as the only international meeting specialising in turkey diseases.
