Our report on the 6th International Symposium on Avian Influenza Conference highlights the progress achieved in the monitoring and control of this threat to poultry and human health. The 6th International Symposium on Avian Influenza opened with a keen sense of anticipation due to the intense media interest in the - so called by lay press - 'bird flu'. The previous meetings were of great interest to the delegates who were working in this field but this one attracted a record number of delegates who had the feeling of being in the 'front line' of a phenomenon.
