Automating cleaning and sanitising systems in processing plants can cut both labour costs and repetitive tasks, but the conditions in the factory present huge challenges to the design engineers. One group in the USA explains what is required and describes the encouraging progress they are making. Kbots and their components xist in many areas of food recessing. However, when searching for robotic products related to meat processing, in particular raw product handling, there are only a few robotic systems available. The DSI water jet cutter is one of these machines, but it does not directly handle the raw product. Handling of raw meat products remains a largely manual task. The US Georgia Tech Research Institute's (GTRI) Food Processing Technology Division has been working to expand product offerings in this sector, with encouraging results.
