The proper cleaning of the drinking system between flocks and the correct use of a good water sanitiser-acidifier during production can help to eliminate many pathogenic problems - and boost performance. Drinking water deserves more attention in intensive poultry production. Often, chlorination is carried out to disinfect the lines but this treatment has a number of limits that will be briefly discussed. There is a better alternative, which improves drinking water quality, whilst raising productionperformance and leaving no residue in meat. Although there is still room for improvement, the "classical" production parameters are being well managed in today's modern poultry production - genetics, feeding, management and husbandry. The water itself can be a source of contamination when its microbiological condition is poor. The Dutch "IKB" ("Integrated Chain Control") norm is <100 E. coli/ml and <100,000 bacteria/ml. Its content of inorganic chemicals, e.g. iron, calcium, chloride etc., can adversely affect digestion and the absorption of products such as medications, vaccines and vitamins.
