In the first part of this series, the various aspects related to serotyping of the different isolates of Haemophilus paragallinarum and the theory of "new" serovars in South Africa was discussed. It was shown that there are 4 serovars of H. paragallinarum, which are known in South Africa, and have been known since the mid-1980s. These are A-1, B-1, C-2 and C-3 (the latter being unique to Southern Africa). This article briefly discusses the development and testing of a local vaccine and the development of a new challenge model for infectious coryza (IC) in chickens. The experimental vaccine was shown to provide superior results compared to commercially available vaccines, although clinical signs of IC were still observed in vaccinated birds.
