Formulating for maximum efficiency of titanium dioxide (TiO2) has never been more important. Simply reducing the 71O2 content of a paint comes at the expense of opac- ity: an unacceptable compromise. Functional extenders can increase the opacity of a coating thereby allowing a reduction in the total TiO2 content without any loss of this key property. In order to be totally opaque and completely hide a substrate, a paint must prevent incident light from interacting with the substrate. This is achieved by reflecting back the light (scattering). As light passes through a coating film, its direction can be changed by either refraction or diffraction.
