The role of solvent mediating the disproportionation of Cu(I)X into Cu(0) and Cu(II)X2 during the single electron transfer living radical polymerisation (SET-LRP) is investigated and reported. A series of polymerisations of methyl methacrylate initiated with methyl 2-bromopropionate catalysed by Cu(0)/Meg-tris(2-aminoethyl)amine at 25°C in DMSO, acetonitrile and mixtures thereof, have been carried out and reported. The kinetics of the ultrafast reaction was of first order. When the solvent was MeCN, Cu(I)X does not disproportionate, and non-linear first order kinetics were observed.
