Trends and challenges in the field of polyurethanes for coatings are discussed. Systems and market requirements are moving from 2K systems to IK systems. The requirements for waterborne applications are increasing and the market is moving constantly from solventborne towards waterborne systems. The approach is making the polyurethanes more user-friendly in terms of two pack systems. Waterborne 2K polyurethanes face the challenge of low solvent content, easy mixing components, faster curing. While the one pack systems are growing in demand, there is a constant challenge to introduce reactive groups into the polyurethane backbone. Such groups may be unsaturated groups from, for example, fatty acids, oils, etc. Waterborne polyurethane-acrylic hybrids are also growing to moderate the costs, which allow polyurethanes to penetrate new market segments.
