Reported is a novel strategy for tailoring nanoparticles of SiO2 and TiO2 with poly(ε-caprolactone) using a self-crosslinkable polyester based on poly(2-hydroxypropylene maleate) adsorbed on the nanoparticle surface and subsequendy heated up to 180°C. The surface initiated polymeriation of 8-caprolactone from the hydroxylalkyl groups on the surface yielded core-shell nanoparticles with crosslinked core and poly(s-caprolactone) shells. Electron transmission microscopy, dynamic light scattering, thermogravimetric analysis were employed to reveal the shell of the nanoparticles. The nanoparticles developed were used to prepare stable and homogenous dispersions with poly(methyl methacrylate-stat-butyl acrylate) solutions. The films casted from these preparations were nearly transparent and homogenous.
