A number of biomass-derived components of polymers have been prepared and investigated in the last decade or two as potential replacements for oil-derived monomers, including triglycerides, 1,3-propanediol and furfural. Acid-catalysed hydrolysis followed by dehydration of polysaccharides leads to various furan derivatives, including furfural and 5-hydroxymethyl furfural. The latter offers a way to large scale manufacture of the promising 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid and its polyesters when combined with a number of biobased polyols.
