Polymeric solar cells (PSC) provide for easier manufacturing than conventional silicon solar cells. The bulk heterojunction technology of PSC focuses on the use of fullerenes and conjugated polymers. In recent years poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) has been the subject of much research: this material, however, is limited as to the region of the solar spectrum from which energy can be gathered. To maximise power conversion efficiency (PCE) the author suggests the use of low band gap polymers utilising an electron deficient internal charge transfer approach and also improvements in open circuit voltage.
