Biomass derived polyols

This patent concerns a PUD where the polyol component is partially derived from biomass. The impetus for this invention is the increasing demand for sustainable and biodegradable polymeric coatings for consumer electronics.The polyisocyanate component of the polyurethane can be of any suitable type, while the biomass polyol is derived from peanut oil, castor oil, soy bean oil, or various others and makes up 10-100 wt% of the polyol component with the remaining fraction sourced from petroleum-based feedstocks. The derived polyol is free of epoxy or alkyd functionality and is unable to undergo oxidative cure. The coating formulation also includes a suitable polyamide and any number of other coating additives including crosslinkers.
