The solvent effect on free radical polymerisation and kinetics of styrene and the three methacrylates (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, glycidyl methacrylate and n-butyl methacrylate) are investigated by pulsed laser polymerisation combined with size exclusion chromatography and proton NMR. The solvents that have been employed are n-butanol, toluene and N,N-dimethylformamide. It is reported that all three solvents have an impact on the polymerisation of styrene and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate copolymer compositions, compared to the bulk copolymerisation, with a systematic variation of monomer reactivity with polarity of the solvent. Butanol affects the copolymerisation of styrene and n-butyl methacrylate, and there is no solvent impact on the copolymerisation of styrene and glycidyl methacrylate. It is found that butanol increases the copolymerisation rate, the N,N-dimethylformamide decreases the copolymerisation rate, but toluene has no visible effect on the copolymerisation rate. The effects are related to t e homopolymerisation rate and the hydrogen bonding must be considered.
