Most of the conversions of fatty acids towards renewable polymers have focused on chemical modifications of any unsaturation on the fatty acid backbone, for example thiol-ene, ruthenium-catalysed metathesis and isomerisation reactions. The authors have previously reported a method of selectively modifying saturated fatty acid methyl esters by using sodium hydride to deprotonate at the a-position and reacting with dimethyl carbonate to produce malonate derivatives (Green Chemistry 2012, 14(9), 2429-2435). This paper continues this approach on unsaturated fatty acids, in particular methyl 10-undecenoate which may be derived from castor oil.
