The concept of post-polymerisation modification is important for producing functional polymers. Acrylates and epoxy resins most lend themselves to post-polymerisation modification, whilst polymers prepared by a step growth mechanism are perhaps less so. The introduction here considers reported methods of preparing linear step growth polymers (eg ester, amide or urethane polymers) with side chain or backbone functionality (particularly hydroxyl groups) that can be modified at a later point. Many of these methods relate to the presence of reactive groups with different levels of reactivity.
