Polyurethanes constitute an important class of polymers, with a wide range of performance characteristics, that are typically prepared by the reaction of a polyol and a polyisocyanate, though there is literature describing other methods of forming urethane-based materials. Most of the renewable materials-related literature has focused on the polyol, for example modifying vegetable oils to form polyols. The other component, the polyisocyanate, is typically prepared using phosgene and amines, but again there are other approaches briefly mentioned in the introduction. This paper describes two methods of preparing isocyanates from vegetable oil-derived materials without using phosgene.
