The Mitsunobu reaction, named after Oyo Mitsunobu (1934-2003), is a low temperature (often room temperature), high yield method of converting alcohols into a variety of functional groups, including esters, using triphenylphosphine and an azodicarboxyl compound (eg diethyl azodicarboxylate (DEAD), diisopropyl azodicarboxylate (DIAD)).
