New polyampholytes or polyelectrolytes having coordination character have been prepared from the reaction of methacrylic acid,imidazole or methyl imidazole and ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether with peroxide initiation.The new polymers were non-soluble and could be milled to non-porous particles.The high level of crosslinking gave very little water retention.The new materials presented ion exchange characteristics proven by using Cu~(2+)as model.
