Recommendations to Make Animal Tests More Humane Made at Scientific Workshop

Toxicity tests could be designed to obtain better information about how animals are responding to chemicals and to treat the animals in a more humane fashion,participants in an international scientific workshop said Feb.7.The two-day workshop,which began Feb.6,was designed to discuss the development of cellular tests that could substitute for a widely used animal-based product-safety test which calculates the dose of a chemical that would kill 50 percent of the animals.The information is used to help doctors treat people who are accidentally or intentionally poisoned.(See related article in this issue.)
