Reactions between Ru-5(mu(5)-C-2)(mu-SMe)(2)(mu-PPh2)(2)(CO)(11) (1) and Co-2(CO)(8) give the octanuclear cluster Co2Ru6(mu(7)-C-2) (mu(3)-SMe)(2)(mu-PPh2)(2)(mu-CO)(4)(CO)(13) (4) and the nonanuclear Co4Ru5(mu(8)-C-2) (mu(3)-SMe)(2)(mu-PPh2)(2)(mu-CO)(7)(CO)(11) (5), both characterised by single crystal X-ray structure determinations. The core of 4 consists of a Co2Ru3 square pyramid sharing a basal edge with a CoRu3 square; the seventh Ru atom bridges the outer edge of the square pyramid. In 5, two of the metal atoms are disordered (M = Co/Ru = 1 : 1). In this complex, two square pyramids (Co2MRu2 and Co2M2Ru) share a non-bonded edge [3.22 Angstrom], with the ninth atom (Ru) bridging an outer edge. In both complexes, the mu(3)-SMe groups and three of the Ru atoms they bridge form an almost planar SRuSRu2 ring. The C-2 ligands hold the two square faces at dihedral angles of 85.75(3) (4), 87.8 degrees (5) and are attached to seven metal atoms in 4, eight metal atoms in 5. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.
