German Firm BASF Seeks French Permission To Test GM Potato Resistant to Blight Fungus

PARIS-German chemical giant BASF Plant Science GmbH is seeking French authorization to conduct field testing of a new genetically modified potato resistant to blight fungus,a government official told BNA Feb.15.BASF has petitioned the Agriculture Ministry for permission to carry out at least two separate field tests on its new GM potato,which contains genes from a wild Mexican relative of the potato,Solanum bulbocasta-num,that are expected to increase resistance to the fungus causing late blight disease.
