The effect of secondary transformation on the optical properties of organic matter released from muck by NaOH at pH=8 was investigated. This study was conducted on hydrogen forms from 13 meadow muck samples (Terric Histosols). States of secondary transformation were estimated using the water holding capacity index, Wi. The humification degree of peat-muck soils (H_z) was determined according to Springer method. The quality of the investigated muck organic matter was estimated by measuring the opticalproperties of the extracts at 280, 470, 664 nm. The relationship between W_1 and the humification number H_z was found. The W, index correlates with values of the ratio of the absorbances, E_4/E_6.
