Stretching the Benchmark

Plastic industry is one of the fastest growing industries in India playing a vital role in our economy. Next two decades will witness unprecedented and explosive growth in all segments of this industry. The industry witnessed incredible growth over past few decades. This was led by the need to find alternative materials which were lighter, energy efficient, easy to process, more versatile and above all 'cost effective'. Besides computing, no other industry has grown as rapidly as plastics. Demand for plastic in India has tripled every decade since seventies. Present polymer consumption is at a level of 5 million tonnes (MT) and is expected to reach 12 MT by 2012. This includes commodity plastics like PP, PE, PVC, PET and engineering plastics like ABS, Nylon and Polyacetal. There are 15 resin manufacturers in India, producing about 6 MT of raw material annually.
