Evaluating the Impact of POCT Blood Gas Analyzers on the Emergency Department Work-Up

A thorough examination and monitoring of blood gas analyzer model allowed us to identify possible advantages in the adoption of point-of-care devices in the emergency department. In this context, the risk of over-utilization appears to be balanced by the optimized use of resources, particularly after the adoption of cartridge-based instruments, which are flexible and suitable for different sizes according to the work volume of each hospital unit. Ultimately, de-centralized systems may provide the tools to help reducing delays in diagnostic testing reporting, one among the several factors affecting emergency department crowding.
