Fire at Jubail United Petrochemical leaves 12 dead / Operations at C2 plant reportedly not affected

A routine maintenance operation at the Jubail-based ethylene plant of Sabic (Riyadh / Saudi Arabia; www.sabic.com) subsidiary Jubail United Petrochemical (Al Jubail / Saudi Arabia) turned deadly on 16 April. Twelve people died after inhaling smoke from a fire that occurred inside the facility in the late morning, with another 11 wounded - six of them in critical condition, parent company Sabic said in a filing with the Saudi Stock Exchange. The 23 employees were all working inside a reactor when the fire, which appears to have been of a rather small scale, erupted.
