EU Countries Fail to Rule on Proposal To Require Austria to Lift Ban on GM Crops

LUXEMBOURG-European Union member states failed Oct.30 to gain a majority to either approve or reject a European Commission proposal requiring Austria to lift its ban on two genetically modified crops.The failure to decide one way or the other in the Council of Environment Ministers means the decision to take legal action against Austria falls to the European Commission.The EU executive body is expected to make a decision by Nov.21,when a World Trade Organization deadline will permit retaliatory trade sanctions to be taken against EU products.
