The organochlorine pesticide endosulfan poses risks to workers both during and after application that warrant additional safety measures, according to an Environmental Protection Agency human health risk assessment for the chemical released Nov. 16 (72 Fed. Reg. 64,624). The agency further determined that endosulfan threatens aquatic and terrestrial organisms. According to the Nov. 16 Federal Register notice, in EPA's 2002 reregistration eligibility decision for endosulfan, the agency said the chemical's dietary, occupational, and other risks likely could be mitigated sufficiently by terminating use on five crops and changing the pesticide's labeling and formula.
