Port Arthur steam cracker processes ethane from shale gas / Revamp allows use of cheaper feedstocks

To capitalize on the US shale gas revolution, the BASF Total Petrochemicals joint venture (BTP, Port Arthur, Texas / USA; www.totalpetrochemicalsusa.com) has revamped its steam cracker, one of the world's largest, in Port Arthur, Texas to process ethane, which is in abundance in US shale gas. The 1m t/y facility, commissioned in 2001, was initially designed to process naphtha.
