Chlorine and epoxy businesses to be put up for sale

In yet another move to downsize upstream assets and concentrate on the more lucrative downstream end of the value chain, US chemical giant Dow Chemical (Midland, Michigan; www.dow.com) plans to carve out a significant portion of its chlorine assets over the next two years and prepare them for a sale or partnership. The businesses in discussion, worth around USD 5 bn in annual sales, include more than 40 production facilities with 2,000 employees at eleven sites in six countries. Earmarked are the US chloralkali and chlorvinyls facilities at Plaquemine, Louisiana, and Freeport, Texas, the large-scale chlorinated organics production facilities at Free-port and Plaquemine as well as at Stade, Germany. Also included is the global epoxy business.
