Profits improve in second quarter 2009 / Margins remain pressured / Focus on cost competitiveness

Borealis (Vienna / Austria; www.borealisgroup.com) has reported an operating profit of EUR 27m in the second quarter of 2009, down on EUR 52m in the same period of 2008, but a significant improvement on an operating loss of EUR 72m in the first quarter of 2009. Sales in the second quarter of 2009 fell by 37% year-on-year to EUR 1.14 bn. The compa ny said its focus on cost competitiveness had contributed to the positive development in the quarter. While sales volumes increased compared with the first quarter of 2009, the volatile market environment continued to put margins under pressure.
