Expect Ticonas to field a grade of its cyclic olefin copolymer specifically targeted at the shrink label market. Early reports indicate the cyclic olefin labels will provide extremely high 80% shrinkage to fit the new contour-bottle shapes. Gloss and clarity look good. And, the cyclic olefin adds a high moisure-barrier layer to the exterior of the bottle.Introduction should be before the end of this year. From Chevron Phillips, expect an improved grade of styrene-butadiene copolymer for blending with polystyrene toproduce shrink labels. Such styrenic shrink labels can have a good balance of properties and offer lower cost than most other candidates. Eastman is a relatively recent supplier of shrink label resins with its PETG polymer. Due to a high shrink of 80%, PETG resin is seeing rapid adoption in this application.
